It's no surprise that the Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia's premier tourist destinations. Photographers, naturalists and any other lovers of nature could hardly find a better place to visit. This huge area includes almost three thousand individual reefs and nine hundred islands that stretch for 2,600 kilometres along Australia's northeastern coast. The state of Queensland has adopted the reef as its icon and it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981
A large part of the Great Barrier Reef lies within the boundaries of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, giving it a protected status and lessening the impacts of human activity. It's a good thing, too, because the Great Barrier Reef, Australia is home to a number of rare species: the dugong, six species of sea turtle and many more types of fish, birds, and cetaceans. Reef ecosystems often exist in a delicate balance. Overfishing in some areas has led to one of the nastier threats to the reef's ecology: the Crown-of-Thorns starfish, whose populations explode when their natural predators are eaten by humans
